As an urban dweller who spends a lot of time indoors, I always surround myself with plants. I love the look of them, the connection to nature, and that they are creating a healthier living space by purifying the air of my home. If you are looking for a low-maintenance house plant to brighten your space and help clean your air, I put together a list of my favorites that are sure to do just that.
5 Easy to Take Care House Plants That Purify Your Air
Snake Plant
The Snake plant, sometimes called Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, is a succulent-like plant ideal for plant newbies or for someone that wants a fuss-free low maintenance plant companion. These plants release oxygen at night, therefore it’s an excellent choice of plant to keep in the bedroom and help you sleep better. It also filters super efficiently toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, toluene, and benzene.
The snake plant requires very little water and some light, making it one of the easiest plants to take care of, and even potentially a good gift idea for a housewarming – especially if you’re not sure how plant-literate someone is.
Zanzibar gem (ZZ plant)
This plant, with its signature wide dark green leaves, is super low maintenance. Hard to kill, even for the brown thumbed amongst us. It requires bright light and a bit of water to thrive. I love the ZZ plant for its looks and because it can remove toxins like benzene and xylene from the air.
Peace Lily
Perhaps my personal favorite of all the house plants is the Peace Lily. Best known for its air-purifying properties, it has long broad dark green leaves and white flowers that bloom in the spring and summer. They are poisonous to pets though, so keep them out of your furry friends’ grasp.
They require plenty of light (although not direct) and they let you know when they need water by dramatically plopping over on themselves.
English Ivy
This is another self-sufficient little plant. Depending on where you live, these may be harder to find, but totally worth the investment if you do. The English Ivy is the perfect plant for bathrooms and damp environments as they have been known to help with reducing mold levels and take care of unpleasant smells in the air. They look great too!

Spider Plant
You won’t find an easier plant to care for that is more resilient than the spider plant. It’s the perfect choice for newbies. And households with pets as this is one of the few non-toxic plants for cats and dogs. On the purifying air front, they efficiently remove toxins such as xylene and carbon monoxide and look great while doing it.
Which Plant Should I Pick?
The options are really endless… and I personally feel it’s hard to make a wrong choice. I would start with one from the list above as they are easy to keep alive and work hard to keep the air in your home clean and pure. Then, when you’re ready, venture out to see what other plants speak to you. Plants are living beings and thrive on positive energy and respond in kind.
