01 Comfort is King
2025 is well… the year we need to buckle up and focus on our well being. I am no psychic, but boy does it feel like this year will be a wild ride. Between climate disasters and political unrest, 2025 promises to be a year of change, the start of a new ear. In times like these, the outer world can feel scary, so we I predict we will continue to make our homes a sanctuary and focus on comfortable and relaxed spaces.
To achieve this, think about how you really use your space. What do you need in your home? Are you a young family that needs ample storage for toys? Or a single person, in a studio that works from home? Your home design should meet you where you are at. Comfort comes from addressing your day to day needs in an aesthetically pleasing way. Lean into comfortable fabrics, storage areas, good lighting and good seating areas.
02 Earth tones dominates
We are leaving boring neutrals and pastels and firmly embracing warm earthy tones in 2025. Mauve, brown, moss green, rust reds, are all going to dominate designer’s color palettes this year. This will also be a result of the material choices which tend to be derived from more natural finishes such as terracotta, clay, ceramics, etc. Kitchens and bathrooms will embrace patterned tiles, paired with darker moodier colors.
Performance fabrics, velvets, and wool will continue to be go-to materials for upholstery and furniture.
03 Bring Nature inside
Continuing on the nature inspired trend, not only are the colors we use going to be a nod to nature, we will also be bring plants inside as decor pieces. Whether it be fresh cut flowers, or potted plants, greenery indoors is a lovely way to enhance your home. I wrote a blog post a few years ago that will give you some ideas of which plants to bring home, if you are unsure which plants to add. Besides the aesthetic benefits, plants purify the air and are healthy home additions too.
If you love the look of fresh flowers but don’t have the budget for them, there are beautiful options for fake flowers that can soften your space without the real thing. Magnolias seems to be fast becoming the flower choice of the moment and craft stores like Michaels have gorgeous options for fake greenery.
04 The Rise of sculptural lighting
Lighting as sculpture, is on the rise. For many years, I personally, approached lighting design by focusing on the light emitted by the fixtures rather than the fixtures themselves. But now I am leaning into using lighting fixtures as another piece to enhance the overall design. One way that makes the lighting stand out is by mixing modern design in more traditional spaces. Julie from Arceri interiors did a fabulous job of in her personal home.
Scale and proportion is key in pulling off the right lighting. How tall are your ceilings? Do you want uniform overall lights, or moodier options in the form of table lamps and wall sconces? How much natural light does your space have? These are all good questions to start with when you are begining to source lighting. If you are overwhelmed with this, I am here to help. Lighting design is always in my interior design services.
05 Arches continue to dominate
I called arches being on the rise in 2024 and this trend shows no signs of slowing down in 2025. They area such a versatile design element, that is a great way to frame, separate or enhance a space. Arches also work quite well in both traditional spaces and more contemporary designs as well.
They can be added as part of the architecture, in hallways, transition spaces, and outdoor areas, or in millwork design and furniture pieces for a more creative spin on this trend. I predict that arches will soon graduate from being a trend to timeless design tool.
06 Embracing Accent ceilings
The final trend of the year, is another one that I have been excited about for a while; accent ceilings. For a while the go-to approach to ceilings was to paint it white or color drench it in the same color as the rest of the room. While both valid approaches depending on the size and height of your room, I have been loving the addition of wallpaper or a contrasting color to to the ceilings. This is a bold trend to embrace, but in the right space it can elevate and create a unique design.
Bedrooms are an excellent area to embrace this trend. Painting a ceiling a dark soothing color, with light walls are a great way to cohesively try this trend. Drew from Lone Fox expertly did this in his bedroom. Textured wallpaper in an office or library, also brings a warmth to the space that makes it a dream area to spend hours in.
I would avoid doing this trend in overly large rooms, or areas where the ceiling height is low.
What are you looking forward to 2025? Do you think I got these trends right? Let me know what you think and what trends you are excited to try this year.
