So grab a drink, get comfy, and let’s dive in!
Is the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer worth it?
The Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer Deep Dive Review
Per the official website, “The Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer is engineered to protect hair from extreme heat damage, with the fastest drying and controlled styling to help increase smoothness by 75%, increase shine by up to 132% and decrease frizz and flyaways by up to 61%.” As someone whose hair left to its own devices makes me look like I’m the lone survivor of a tornado, these claims are certainly appealing. Though I honestly thought they were too good to be true.
I’ve tried so many products that promise miracles, but most ended up not working for me and only appeared to work on fine, straight, manageable hair. Keep scrolling and you will see my hair in its natural state is certainly a far cry from “manageable.” The $400 price tag didn’t entice me to try it on a whim either. It seemed like a steep cost to try out a hairdryer when the one I had was… fine.
Well, I’m happy to report that my assumptions were totally wrong. And I couldn’t be more excited to share this Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer review with you. After using it consistently, I can say that it does in fact do a great job at reducing frizz and providing a smooth blowout in way less time. Even if your hair is as difficult as mine. I received the special gift edition as a birthday gift from my sister who bought it at Sephora. I later bought this soft travel case directly from Dyson.
The Breakdown of what you get
The special gift edition came with the hair dryer in fuchsia and some accessories. Dyson typically sells a few standard colors, including nickel with gray, fuchsia, and purple accents—there’s also a beautiful gold plated edition that costs an extra $100. If you want something special at the standard price, look for the hair dryer during the holiday season. Dyson launches a new limited edition color each year that sells in a hot minute.
While there are no differences in each hair dryer’s functionality. Every edition comes with different accessories. For example, mine came with a storage hanger, rubber mat, detangling comb, and beautiful round styling brush in the same fuchsia finish. I love that this set is meant to work for different types of hair, coming with three attachment nozzles: one for smoothing, one for styling, and a diffuser for curls. The diffuser is above my skill level so it hasn’t gotten much use since I got this set. Dyson sells separate attachments for fine and coarse hair, as well as display stands and storage boxes.
The Storage options
Speaking of storage, I didn’t find the storage hanger to be very useful or even a viable option for storing an expensive piece of equipment such as the Dyson. In fact, the one thing I found lacking in the gift set was a lack of proper storage for the tools and hairdryer. Like I mentioned before, Dyson separately sells storage boxes in a variety of colors, but none of them would fit the hair dryer with the additional accessories that come with the gift set, which seemed crazy to me. I ended up getting this bag, which is a soft case and the only option that comfortably fits all the Dyson pieces. I even managed to fit a few more things in, so all my hair tools are happily rooming together.
In addition to my bag, two similar ones in different colorways are available. This type of storage is like mine, with magnetic flaps and one side pocket in the interior, which is perfect for the smaller accessories such as the rubber mat and comb.
How does the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer work?
Regardless of what color you get, every hair dryer is powered by a V9 proprietary motor that pushes 13 liters of air per second. This air is then amplified through its nozzle design that produces a high-velocity column of air, which promotes faster drying time.
The Dyson has an intelligent heat control that measures the air temperature some 40 times per second. What this means is that it will give you the maximum heat your hair can handle without damaging it. I have gotten the best results using the Dyson on wet hair, rather than damp, as at this stage frizz is already forming and therefore harder to smooth out.
There are eight buttons on the neck of the Dyson: a toggle switch to power on/off; three buttons that control the speed at low, medium, and high rates; as well as three buttons that set the desired heat—one for hot heat at 212° for fast drying and styling, 176° for regular drying, and a cooler setting for diffuser drying. There is also a cold shot button if you want cold air at the end of your blowout. I keep mine on medium speed and high heat.
All the attachments are magnetic and easy to rotate and swap out. The attachments do get hot, so be careful when switching them around. I would recommend keeping a small towel nearby and use that to handle them when in use.
How do the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer accessories work?
My gift set came with the smoothing nozzle, style concentrator, and diffuser. The smoothing nozzle is a wider nozzle that is meant to give you a smooth, natural finish. I use this to “pre-dry” my hair and remove excess water from it. I then switch to the styling concentrator, which is a much smaller nozzle and therefore really good at focusing the heat in a smaller section of the hair. This nozzle gives you a super sleek result, comparable to what you would get from a salon blowout. As I mentioned earlier, the diffuser didn’t work for me. Still, if you already use a diffuser, I’m sure you’d appreciate this one being added to the set.
I found that the rubber mat is pretty essential to keeping the hair dryer from sliding off the counter. The one time I forgot to use it, the hair dryer slipped off my vanity and now has a tiny scuff at the base. The paint appears to be super delicate. So at best, your hair dryer will have a few nicks and scuffs—but at worst, you could damage the motor and need to have it repaired. The Dyson also comes with a 9-foot long cord, which gives you plenty of room to move around and spread out. Although in my NYC bathroom, this isn’t a problem I have to worry about.
How well does the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer work?
Let’s revisit Dyson’s claim—their main selling points are heat protection, faster drying time, and smoother-looking results. And now let’s see the results! Because it wouldn’t be a Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer review without a before and after.
Does the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer dry my hair faster?
Yes! I usually spend 45 minutes to an hour drying my hair. Crazy, I know, but in my defense, I have a lot of hair! With the Dyson, I have been able to dry my hair in about 30-45 minutes and it looks much better. I always use the brush that came with the set and have gotten professional-level results with it. I use the Gisou oil and spray which I explained my love for here.
Does the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer reduce the frizz and flyaways and look smoother?
Again, yes! I was able to make my hair salon-worthy by myself and in less time. But this only worked when my hair was still wet enough to not start frizzing. That being said, the results totally surpassed what I thought I could achieve with the Dyson. You don’t need super-advanced techniques to get great results.
Does the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer protect my hair from damage?
This is hard to tell because I have highlighted hair that is pretty porous and dry, so my hair always looks kind of damaged. All things considered, it certainly didn’t get any worse. The lack of frizz indicates to me that my hair is as healthy as it could get, given what I put it through.
I thought I would also address a few frequently asked questions about the Dyson:
Is the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer silent?
No, especially not when using the higher speed settings, but it isn’t uncomfortably loud either. Most hair dryers on the market today are fairly quiet, and the Dyson is comparable to others out there.
Is the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer dual voltage?
No. It’s designed to be used in the country it’s sold in, so be sure to check the voltage at the destination you plan to travel to before packing it.
Is the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer ionic?
Yes! It has an ionic design that promotes concentrated airflow to dry hair quickly and minimize damage from excess heat exposure.
The Pros and Cons
The Pros
The fast drying time and professional results with minimal effort are the biggest pros in my opinion. The fact it’s easy to use has handy magnetic attachments has a pretty, sleek design, makes the Dyson Supersonic totally worth the investment.
The Cons
The cost, the lack of storage options, no dual voltage are the biggest cons for me. I also didn’t love how fragile the paint appears to be and how hot the attachments get.
The Verdict
I recommend the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer 1,000% percent. I used to go to blowout bars, and it really added up. With the Dyson hair dryer, I honestly don’t miss going and am even saving some money. If budget is a concern, I would wait for the spring, summer, or holiday sale events at Sephora and buy it then. Alternatively, I hear that there are refurbished models for sale on eBay that are as much as 40% off the original price if you’re willing to give that a try.
My opinion is that it will pay for itself in the long run, both in money saved from fewer trips to the salon and in the time saved, which is our most valuable commodity. If you have any questions about my honest Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer review, let me know in the comments below!
