You know that feeling when you step into a really nice hotel room and you just… don’t want to leave? Unfortunately, that’s not possible, and most of us don’t have an interior designer and daily housekeeper to help us out. That’s why I’m sharing six ways to create a luxurious bedroom.
5 simple ways to make your bedroom more luxurious
1. Get rid of the clutter
I don’t know about you, but there’s always one room wherever I live that becomes an absolute dumping site. In my small NYC apartment, that room has become my bedroom. My stacks of books and unfinished craft projects don’t scream luxury, but luckily there’s an easy fix.
All I need is to do is throw on some music, a binge-worthy podcast, or an interesting audiobook, and then get to work. I start by taking stock of what I have and then separate it into three piles: keep, purge, and donate. I try to keep only what will fit in my closet and dresser. This is a good way to edit what you have and make sure you’re only holding on to things that will serve you in the long run.
If after a good edit, there are still additional things that need to be stored outside of your closet, I would recommend investing in some nice storage boxes or under-bed storage. If your bed is too low, you can pick up some bed risers and gain a bit more space that way. Of course, this solution can quickly give your luxurious bedroom a college dorm vibe, so make sure you invest in a nice bed skirt that will hide any trace of them. A lot of places that do custom curtains and upholstery can also make you a custom bed skirt—check with your local seamstress for recommendations too.
If you are starting from scratch, consider built-in storage like this one. I love these because it looks great and keeps all the clutter out of sight, yet easily accessible.
2. Invest in a gorgeous duvet cover
Of all the tweaks you could make to create a more luxurious bedroom, this is an easy one that makes a big impact. The bed is the biggest piece of furniture in your bedroom, which also makes it the focal point. If you can only make one change, swapping your duvet cover would be my recommendation.
For ultimate luxury, I look for fabrics that have a sheen, subtle patterns, and a neutral color palette. Metallic details bring a bit of glamour without being overwhelming! I also suggest keeping the number of pillows to a minimum—no more than four extras in addition to the ones you’re resting your head-on. Here is some glam-worthy option.
(And this may go without saying, but also remove any stuffed animals and additional decor that you may have outgrown.)
3. Pick your wall color and artwork
To elevate your luxurious bedroom even more be sure to pick a color scheme and wall art that’s cohesive with your bedspread and furniture style. I personally love cool colors for bedrooms such as gray, lavender, and navy, as these colors have a very calming effect and promote optimal sleep.
And remember to keep the wall art strategic, with only a few key pieces. While I enjoy a good asymmetric gallery wall, for the bedroom I would suggest sticking to a balanced and symmetric arrangement. I would also favor the images being black and white for another touch of glamour that won’t take away from your palette. Etsy is a wonderful place to source artwork and supports small businesses.
4. Don’t forget your windows
As much as I’m pro DIY-ing everything, I will suggest that you invest in having good quality blackout curtains custom-made for your space. This will ensure that your room is dark enough for optimal sleep, and you’ll also get the exact look and size you need.
When selecting your window coverings, don’t be afraid to mix curtain types. Your space may need a roman shade next to a draped curtain because of a column placement or other architectural feature—just keep the fabric for both of them the same, and it will feel pulled together and add interest to your luxurious bedroom. Pull inspiration from your bedspread but don’t match the fabric exactly. We want cohesiveness, but an exact match can become overwhelming.
5. Keep furniture to a minimum
Unless you have an extra-large room, your bedroom shouldn’t have a bunch of furniture. Beyond the bed itself, there should be no more than a chair, nightstands next to your bed, and maybe a dresser if you really need the extra storage. Instead of adding more furniture, invest in a nice rug to anchor the bed in the room and keep any additional decor items to a minimum.
I don’t often subscribe to the idea that less is more, but I will happily make an exception for creating a luxurious bedroom. Let me know your thoughts, decor ideas, or questions in the comments below!
