Six Architectural Design Trends to Watch in 2024
As we roll into the new year, new trends and design styles are taking shape. We are leaving neutrals behind, embracing more lived-in, relaxed environments, and controversially leaving my favorite metal finish behind. Let’s get into the design trends to watch in 2024.
1. The Modern Colonial replaces the Farmhouse architecture
The farmhouse aesthetic is being left behind for its more elevated cousin, the revival of French and colonial architecture. We will still see the fresh and casual elements of the farmhouse style sprinkled in several aspects of design but instead of the exposed beams and bead board walls paired with other quintessential farmhouse details; applied trim and elevated vintage pieces will become more prevalent this year.
Exterior facades will play up on symmetry and make the most of windows with black trim and other elements that allude to the classic designs of centuries past. White stucco and brick will also have a moment in 2024.
Contemporary architecture will continue to find its audience, but it will be more limited to custom design on unique sites and locations.
2. Arches will be everywhere
One element I find myself adding to more designs is arches. In interiors especially, a good arch brings a flare and elegance to a space while not being overpowering. The space feels more fluid and interesting to me than a plain old rectangular opening.
If changing the architecture of your home, feels overwhelming, there are ways to bring the arch into your space with furniture and decor when not fully committing to changing parts of your home’s design. Adding arches to armoires, shelving and storage units are a great way to also incorporate arches, without having to fully commit to them for the long haul.
3. Moody interiors take over neutral spaces
After a long run of light interiors with a neutral color palette reigning, there will be a definite shift to spaces that play with more moody jewel tones. Rich maroon and chocolate tones will start popping up more in furniture fabrics and wall colors.
There will be a trend to make homes comfortable not just beautiful. As we crave authenticity in what we consume online, so do we crave more realistic and comfortable living enviroments. There will be more a relaxed lived in feel to design this year and embracing color will definitely add to making spaces feel more inviting and cozy.
4. Nostalgia takes over Kitchen design
Nostalgia has been a big theme from last year that continues to barrel through into 2024. While last year, elements of the past were more prevalent in the decor pieces sprinkled throughout the spaces, it is now making their way into bigger architectural spaces like kitchens and bathrooms. In kitchens specifically expect to see more wood doors and colorful choices like British Racing Green (you know I am a fan!), navy, and even magenta or red cabinets.
If fashion is any indication of upcoming design trends, elements from the 70s will be prevalent and that includes home design. Expect to see bold colors everywhere… Even in kitchens.
5. Silver and Chrome finishes dethrones Brass
Brass, my personal favorite has been the longest-reigning metal in trends. As much as I still love it and will continue to specify it for timeless projects, this year there will be a shift to more silver tones. Chrome and pewter specifically will be having their moment in the spotlight.
These cooler metal tones will create a super interesting juxtaposition with the warm reds and browns that will also be trending this year. I recommend a chrome accent in lights and decor to ease into the transition from brass and gold tones to cooler metals.
6. Work from Home is here to stay
Four years post the global pandemic, many of us are still working remotely. Even if you returned to an office job the awareness of having a comfortable space to work from is now essential. According to the latest trend reports from sites like Pinterest and Google, we are still searching for creative ways to add home offices. The incoming trend will be to incorporate them in nooks, shelving, and cute corners. In terms of accessories, a walking pad, and a standing desk, will also continue to be in-home office essentials. If you have the space, a desk with a treadmill should be a must.
Coffee stations and having a dedicated space in your home for coffee is also a rising trend. With excellent coffee machine options and the increase in hours we spend at home, having a dedicated coffee station will be trending throughout the year as well.
Trends from last year that aren’t showing signs of slowing down
Velvets and performance fabrics are here to stay. They gained popularity last year and continue to be the go-to choice for designers. Clients love them too!
Another trend that will continue to stay relevant is the modern take on Art Deco architecture and decor. This is especially true in New York City, where the designers have been honoring this style in many new projects. It’s mixing the classic and opulent art deco details with ultra-contemporary ones that make the spaces exciting to live in.
By far the one thing that is always on trend is individuality. Be authentic and embrace what you really love. If none of these trends speak to you, skip them. As they say, trends are temporary and style is timeless. Embrace yours and look to trends for inspiration rather than something you must do.
