A few weeks into a fresh year and I am already seeing a few interior design trends take shape. While last year it was all about organic modern and boucle everything, this year is more about personalisation and practicality. And I have to say, that I am excited for every trend on the horizon. Let’s get right into it!
Six Dreamy Interior Design Trends to Watch in 2023
1. Entryway Decor
After navigating a pandemic, working from home and mostly isolating for months on end. The trend is to start finding balance and normality in our everyday. There is a focus on welcoming people back into your home and creating a welcoming entrance for your guests and your family is very much a focus this year. The entryway sets the tone for your home, so it’s no suprise that there has been more thought to entryway spaces.
Easy ways to spruce up our entryway is to clear the clutter, add artwork and use a functional and beautiful piece such as a bench.
2. Slabs instead of tile
Slabs have been king in kitchens for a while, but now they are carrying over to bathrooms as well. Not only does a seamless piece of slab with heavy veining look abosultye beautiful, it also reduces the existance of grouts which over time change color and are one of the biggest culprits in making a space look grimy and outdated.
Because the veins in the slabs are natural and unique, the space looks elevated and one of a kind, almost like a work of art themselves.
3. Warm Color Palletes
After years of grays, then beiges, and whites dominating as the go-to color schemes in interior design, we finally are seeing moody colors take over. This is one of the interior design trends I am most excited to see popping up. Complex hues, like mossy greens, deep rust, and magenta are infusing personality and charm in every room.
Using color can be very intimating for many people, which is why the neutral palletes have dominated for so long. However whith a few simple guidelines, color can elevate your space and change the entire mood of a room.
To use color cohesively pick one main tone, and pick a neutral color that makes that accent color pop. For example if you pick a mossy green, a cream or warm white works best to highlight it. Then complement the green tone with either lighter or darker versions of that green. Add no more that 3 unique colors to a space; the main color, a neutral background one and a complementary one. In are case, a few pops of a rusty orange would enhance the green.
4. Nostalgia for Past Architectural Styles
I am not sure what’s triggering this, but there is a deep nostalgia for bygone times across generations. Just like Gen Z is obsessed with old phones and cameras, millennials are gravitating toward timeless and traditional decor. Trims, chair rails, and crown moldings are making a comeback. Vintage furniture, paired with new pieces are one of the ways interior designers bring unique touches into a space.
A nod to art deco, and brutalism in particular, will be on the rise as an interior design trends in 2023. Sculptural chairs, coffee tables and other accessory furniture in these styles in concrete or granite will be on the rise.
5. Delicate, Contrasting Lights instead of Statement pieces
The trend that has been emerging is to keep the decor more classic and pair it with an ultra modern light fixtures. This paring helps keep the rooms feeling fresh and with a bit of visual interest too. While often an after thought, when decorating, lighting is absolutely critical in making or breaking a space. The designer in me thinks of the aesthestic value lighitng adds, while the architect in me is thinking of the funcitonality.
If you are feeling stuck, start by thinking about about what is it’s function in the room, and what mood does it set. These questions help narrowing down what type of like you need and will enhance your space.
6. Performance Fabrics for the win
While last year was all about Bocle fabrics, this year I predict velvet will have its moment as well as anything that is a easy to care for performance fabric. Velvet lends to an era of more structured furniture which is very much on point with the modern art deco furtniere pieces that are coming back in style. The colors that are trending, like rust, green and deeper corals all pop and thrive in a velvet finish.
