Can you believe it’s December and the holidays are around the corner? As I write this I am in complete denial that not only, we are deep into the fall and it’s time to switch from ice coffees to chai lattes, but soon it will be heavy boots and puffy jackets season.
If you (like me) have been procrastinating preparing for the colder months because you want to stretch out our lost days of summer and fall, I hear you and I am there with you, but it’s time to move forward and get ready to make the most of the coming months.
Nothing gets me more excited for a new season than a little shopping and if you haven’t really peeked at what fall fashion has in store for us this year, you are in luck. Not only are there great sales going on right now for winter coats, but I have also compiled some of my favorite styles that are sure to get you inspired and excited for a warm and stylish winter. Here are some of my favorites.
The Best Coat for Your Body Type
The Best Coats for Petites
If you are petite, I would encourage stick to above the knee cuts and have fun with patterns and colors. The winter is drab enough, so feel free to bring a little whimsy to your outwear with a different color palette, like this option from JCrew. I like to switch it up from the typical dark tones that dominate the fall collections.
I would also highly suggest looking for longer length coats that are specifically cut in petite sizes. This way the waist and the sleeve, and floor lengths will hit you in the correct spots.
A note about sizing, if you are used to buying regular/straight size clothing, you may find that you are a different number size in petite cuts. Typically you will need to size a number up. Be sure to double check your measurements against the brands sizing. I have a free sizing guide which you can get access to by joining my mailing list here.
The Best Coats for Plus Size
Like petites, this is a market that I wish there were more options to choose from, but unfortunately, the fashion industry has some catching up to do. I do love a few options like the Eloquii faux leather coat which is super chic and practical.
Another great option is this Tahari coat created by Macy’s. I love this option so much because not only its a classic and effortlessly elegant cut, the plaid fabric is perfect for the colder months. It’s a coat you can wear over and over without tiring of it.
If you fall in the plus size range, I would look for styles that include details like belts that clinch at the natural waist. I would stick to classic patterns, like houndstooth, plaid and tweed.
The Best Coats for Tall Women
If you are tall and fit in the regular sizing range, you are in luck. The fashion industry tends to favor your body type so you have the most styles to choose from. That being said, my recommendations for you, would be to pick a puffer coat.
On many body types this style, while practical, can be overwhelming, but you can pull it off beautifully.
I would move away from the drab black, grays and try a peach, lavender or mauve tone this year. My picks are the Hooded Quilted Shell Coat from McCartney adidas line and this Abercrombie & Fitch Ultra long puffer which comes in a variety of fun colors.
The Best Coat for Pregnant Women
While buying a maternity coat may not be necessary depending on what stage of your pregnancy you are in. I did find this 3 in 1 coat which is absolutely genius because it can be worn while you are expecting and after your little one arrives and keep you both snug and warm. It has a faux fur lining that will keep you both warm without harming any animals.
The Splurge worthy coats
Winter coats, are among some of the items I highly suggest investing in. Not only are higher price points typically better quality and will last you longer, you will also be wearing it frequently for several months and possibly for years.
A Burberry trench coat is a classic and a universally flattering cut that will look good on everyone. I love that this coat’s structured details make any outfit immediately elegant. I promise you won’t regret this investment.
What I like about these two Burberry pieces, is the versatility in their designs. It’s like buying several coats for the price of one.
I also love the faux fur turned that started a few winters ago and now seems to be here to stay. This Derek Lam 10 coat is cozy, stylish and no animals where harmed in its making.
The Best Coats for All
Finally, here are some coats I just love on everybody.
Between the simple lines and the extensive colors J.Crew’s Cocoon coat makes it easy to find one that will fit your personality. I tend to favor the neutral pink and yellow tones, but am seriously tempted to buy this in a few different colors as well.
Cape Maje
My last pick is probably my favorite silhouette of all time. I love a good cape and I will wear one wherever I need to feel like a superhero (am I the only one that does that?). This is also a forgiving cut that easily fits more body types. Embrace your inner super hero and take flight with a fabulous cape like this one and go conquer the day.
I hope this post gives you a bit of wintry inspiration for the months ahead. While I seek to guide when you are feeling uninspired, I am by no means limiting what you can wear or feel good in. Please experiment and find things that make you feel great. Often the best the best style is the one that is unconventional and take risks.
